Inventor comment resulting from a wet season - Because of 2008 wet conditions in so many areas, many people applying Nitrogen by side dressing pushed the envelope on soil conditions just to get the nitrogen applied.
Side dressing in too wet a soil generally - such as the top two inches dry and the soil below nearly 100% saturated, the eight inch depth knife shank can compact soil , not crumbling it. This can change the total surface area of soil the gas is contacting and perhaps allow losses to atmosphere as a result.
Too wet a soil with the NH3 Dirt Dog may not even allow the NH3 Dirt Dog soil control effect. The operator instead finding a mud ball pushing ahead of the knife shank under the NH3 Dirt Dog top side dress shield plate.
Reports to the inventor himself by telephone in 2008 added this posting to the website as an assist. 6-22-2008 - "Crop conditions in many areas show it is time to apply even though it is too wet. We need to say something about it."
The NH3 Dirt Dog units are effective in affixing nitrogen in friable soil in any season in the year. Spring and Autumn applications are quite effective in preparation to avoid just such difficulty as an extremely wet early growing season.
